Now that we’re all at home, many of us are purchasing our sewing supplies from the biggest online shopping store, Amazon. I love the efficiency of Amazon’s two-day Prime shipping and their vast selection of items for my sewing corner. Below you will find a detailed list of my favorite sewing supplies from Amazon to add to your collection. You can also check out my YouTube video where I share this list in detail with a few demonstrations of these products including how to press out shoulder seams like a pro!
Pressing Tools
Pressing your fabrics is an important step in the sewing process. These are the items that I find most useful for pressing out my seams:
- Tailor’s Ham – This weird oblong/tear dropped shaped item is great for pressing curved shoulder seams and darts.
2. Tailor’s Seam Roll- Great for pressing out side seams and other seams that don’t want to lie flat with a simple press.
3. Ham Holder – This tool holds your Tailors Ham while you use it for pressing.
4. Pressing Cloth- Prevents scorching and shine marks on your fabric.
5. Tailor’s Clapper- This is a smoothed out piece of wood that helps the seams lie flat when placed over a freshly pressed seam.
6. Glasshead Pins – These thin pins don’t melt when your press over them!
Sewing Books
Everyone needs great sewing reference books in their arsenal and these are a few of my faves:
7. Fit for Real People – Great for learning to fit commercial patterns to your body.
8. Reader’s Digest Complete Guide to Sewing: Great all-around sewing technique book.
9. Stretch by Tilly and the Buttons: Perfect for learning to work with knit fabrics with great patterns included. Check out my review of the Bibi skirt on YouTube and how I styled it with Pattern Preacher Eloise Jacket in this post.
Cutting, Marking and Measuring
Scissors
A great pair of scissors makes all the difference! Here are the sewing scissors that I keep in my rotation:
10. Gingher Scissors – I love the spring version with closing side. They are easy on the hands and come with a blade protector.
11. Gingher Duckbill/Applique Scissors – These are great for smaller areas and good for small projects like bra making and trimming bulky seams.
12. Kai Tailors Scissors- These are a bit heavier and sharper. They are useful for cutting out thicker fabrics like denim and faux fur.
13. Kai 5.5″ Scissors – These are lightweight and work well for trimming small areas underneath facings and into curves.
Marking Tools
Having accurate markings is helpful when constructing your garments. I vary my marking tools according to project, but my favorite three are:
14. Frixion Pens: These are erasable pens that come in a variety of colors. They disappear when you press over them. They are amazing!
15. Clover Chaco -Liners – These refillable chalk rollers press out chalk as you roll them. Great for marking dart lines!
16. Simflex Buttonhole Gauge: This is a great tool for helping you create even button and buttonhole spacing. As a short person, I often have to adjust patterns and this helps me line up my buttons to suite me perfectly.
Rulers
You need good rulers and measuring tools to help you make necessary pattern adjustments. These are my most frequently used items.
17. Stitch Buzz Curved Rulers: These are by far my favorite rulers. They are great for adjusting patterns between sizes and for marking seam allowance between sizes.
18. Dritz 2×18 Inch Ruler- This a great all-around ruler to help make adjustments on longer straight lines and for checking to make sure your pattern is even with the grainline.
Additional Sewing Supplies
19. Clover Wonder Clips: These clips can be used in place of pins when working with thick fabrics. Many sewists use these in place of pins for all of their sewing projects.
20. Schmetz Sewing Machine Needles: I like to buy my sewing machine needles in bulk. Amazon has boxes of 100 needles in various weights. My most used are the Universal size 70, 80 and 90.
21. Clover Tracing Wheel: This wheel is great for using with
22. Bias Tape Makers: These are great for making your own bias tape for a unique look with Hong Kong seam finishing or to better match your fabric in patterns that require bias tape.
23. Clover Seam Ripper: Because we all make mistakes, we always need a good seam ripper in our vicinity. These Clover seam rippers are my favorite. They tend to stay sharper than other seam rippers that I’ve tried.
Sewing Entertainment
24. Amazon Echo Dot – I love listening to music, audiobooks, and podcasts when I sew. This cool gadget allows you to request your favorite tunes and audio-entertainment hands- free. Listening from the Echo really pushes me to continue sewing for longer stretches of time.
Here are some great audiobooks that I’ve read or listened to on my Amazon Echo that I think you’d love:
You can also listen to these books using the Amazon Audible App without purchasing the Echo Device and you can sign up for a free trial with the link below:
