So I decided it was high time that I sew my first trench coat. I see ladies rocking this classic style every Fall and I’ve yearned to make one of my own. These coats were originally created for World War I soldiers in Great Britain which accounts for the tell-tale military details of gun flaps and shoulder epaulets. Trench coats have certainly evolved from their origins to fit into our everyday lifestyle. They now range from basic utility to silk couture designs. Check out this amazing article from Threads Magazine for more details on the history of the Trench coat.
I decided to dip my toes in the trench coat sewing pool with the La Maison Victor London Jacket. This pattern is from 2018 Issue 3 and is designed for woven fabrics such as denim, twill, and gabardine. I used a camel-colored twill that was gifted to me as a member of the Minerva blog team. I chose this fabric because I love this unique tan shade. It is composed of 98 percent cotton two percent elastane. You can pick up a piece for yourself from Minerva here: Camel Twill
Pattern Details:
This pattern is available in European Sizes 30-48 for busts of 28 inches through 45.7 Inches. I sewed a size 40 without any alterations for fit. I had to raise the large pockets so they wouldn’t continue to drop below the jacket hemline and I switched out the buttons for metal heavy duty snaps. I finished the insides with self-made bias tape for a couture finish.
Here is my detailed video review of this Jacket along with a review of the Glissando Skirt from my last post:
Here are some other great patterns that I am considering for my next Trench Coat:
- Named Isla Trench Coat: This is a classic double breasted style coat with caped back and sleeve tabs.
2. Vouge 1650: I love the back vent and sleeve band on this version as well and the stylized belt loop holder and back vent opening.
3. Simplicity 8890 by Mimi G Style: This is another cropped style jacket great for early spring and fall.
4. Burda Twill Trench 04/18 #103: I adore the asymmetrical hemline of this version.
5. Cashmerette Chilton Trench Coat: I love the buttoned side pockets and the v shaped back on this version. Check out Nateida of SewNaturalDane’s video review of this lovely coat.
Trench coats are great wardrobe staples and I am looking forward to sewing my next version. Which one would you like to sew? Leave me a comment below to let me know.
Until next time,
