Hello Sewing Friends,
Today, I am sharing my review of the newest sewing pattern release by Love Notions Patterns; The Metra Blazer. This is a classic jacket style with many unique design details that I think you’ll enjoy.
Pattern Details
This gorgeous jacket pattern is designed for medium to heavy weight knit fabrics such as sweatshirt fleece, French terry, ponte knit and double knits with at least 25% stretch. It can also be sewn in drapier knits for a more relaxed look.
The Metra is available in sizes XS-5X for high bust measurements of 31” (79 cm) to 55” (140 cm), full busts of 33” (84 cm) to 57.5” (146 cm), waists of 26.5” (67 cm) to 49.5” (126 cm) and hips of 35.5” (90 cm) to 59.5” (151 cm). The bodice comes in standard bust sizes for those with a three inch or smaller high-bust to full-bust ratio and full bust sizes for those with a four inch or greater high-bust to full-bust ratio.
There are only five pattern pieces per view for this pattern including:
- Wide Lapel or Shawl Collar– cut 4 times
- Back Piece – cut twice
- Side Panels – cut twice
- Sleeves (cut twice) and
- Welts (two pair, one in fabric and one in interfacing)
Sewing Process and Pattern Changes
I sewed the wide lapel view in a size small at the bust and waist and graded out to a size medium at the hip. I also shorted the bodice by 1.25 inches on the front/collar (this is one large piece), side seam and back pieces. I also shortened the sleeves by one inch. I love the fit with these minor tweaks for my 5’1” frame.
Fabric
The fabric I used is a gorgeous French Terry or sweatshirt fleece from Jo-Ann Fabrics. It’s a lovely mauve rose color with shiny foiled gold leaves throughout the design. I was happy with how it washed and sewed. The gold foiling did not flake off at all while washing, sewing or wearing.
The directions for the pattern are extremely clear and walk you through each step of the sewing process. While the faux welt pockets look complicated, they were easy to create. In addition, there is also video link included in the pattern that gives you a clear visual demonstration of the process. The only other potentially tricky part of the pattern is attaching the collar facing to the back using the burrito method. Fortunately, this step is also demonstrated with a video tutorial link in the pattern. I believe an advanced beginner could handle this pattern without issue as long you carefully follow the instructions and diagrams along with included tutorials.

Final Thoughts
The Metra Blazer elevates the knit jacket with the additions of classic welt side pockets and on-trend shawl and wide lapel collar options. The wide lapel version certainly gives me 1970’s vibes, yet it’s stylish for today’s fashion. This is a great jacket to wear as we move away from the cold days and into the warmer months and I know I’ll be rocking it every chance I get!
