Hello Everyone!
Today, I wanted to share my most recent top and it is the Ada Peplum Top by Duana DIY Patterns. This is the first sewing pattern created by Duana Chandler on Instagram who has an amazing sense of style and I am glad to see that she has decided to add to the independent sewing community. This was also the pattern selection for the May Sewyourview challenge hosted by That’s Sew Monica on Instagram.
The Ada Pattern
The Ada is a cute peplum top or circular skirted dress pattern with a cross-over button sleeve. It is available in sizes 0 to 28 and fits bust sizes of 33.5 to 58 inches. The button placket is what drew me to this pattern. It’s such a unique design detail that I wanted in my wardrobe.
Sewing and Pattern Changes
The pattern sizes are nested in alternating sizes, so I chose to sewed a size six at the shoulders, a ten at the bust and fourteen at the waist and hips to accommodate my measurements. I had to scoop out about 1/4 inch from the bottom armsyce and sew the top of the side seam at 3/8 inch seam allowance (instead of the provided 5/8 seam allowance) because the armholes were a bit tight on me. (I suggest that you make a muslin before cutting into your fabric for this pattern). I also decided to use a thread loop and button closure on the back instead of adding in a zipper. I hemmed the bottom of the peplum with a three-thread rolled hem and I love the ending result of this top.
Fabric and Buttons
I used a cute yellow and black fabric that I picked up from The Jackson Heights Discount Fabric Store in NYC in 2018 to make this top. Unfortunately, this store has since closed down, but I am glad I finally used it. It has the feel of an Ankara print and it has beautiful black leaf design. I chose some yellow buttons from Tabitha Sewer for the button placket and back button closure. I love how these buttons pop out against this beautiful print.
Styling
The primary reason I chose this fabric was to match it up to this amazing yellow hat that I purchased from Celebrities Boutique last year. I love this pretty yellow shade and I knew this print would work perfectly with it. I wore the top with a faux leather skirt that I made using the BiBi Pattern from the Tilly and the Buttons Stretch Book a few years ago. I also added a new pair of black spikes earrings from Xtra by Stacey to my look. (You can check out the rest of my earring haul in this video: XtrabyStacey Earring Haul. Of course, I wore this outfit with my favorite (only) yellow heels from DSW to make the look complete. By the way, these shoes have gotten more use in my wardrobe than I could have ever imagined. I highly recommend picking up a pair of yellow shoes!
Final Thoughts
I’m loving the look of this fun top and adore the sleeve detail on this pattern. It’s a versatile top that I can style with many outfits all year long and I love how it turned out after the pattern alterations.
