Hello sewing friends,
Today, I am sharing my review of the Love Notions Tidal Dress and Top Pattern. I’m also sharing a chance to win a free sewing pattern and possible chance to win a free sewing machine.
Pattern Details
The Love Notions Tidal is a quick and easy knit dress pattern available in sizes XS-3X with plans to expand to 5X. It fits full bust sizes 33″ to 49.5″, Waists of 26.5 ” to 41.5 and hips of 35.5″ to 51.5″. It has princess seams between the front and back pieces and there are options to sew it as a tank top, knee-length dress or maxi dress. You also have the option of adding short sleeves as well. The pattern only has four to five pattern pieces including the front, back, arm and neck bands/bindings and optional short sleeves.
Sewing and Fabric
I chose a fun tie-dye knit from JoAnn Fabrics to make my dress in the maxi length for the #sewmaxiformothersday Instagram Challenge that I’m hosting with Tea of Crumpetsteandsewing. Check out this post for more information about the challenge: Third Annual Sewmaxiformothersday Instagram Challenge
This four-way stretch fabric has a lovely drape that was perfect for this design. The digital print reminds me of the Japanese style of Shibori dying and I just knew I had to make a dress with it. The Tidal has nice princess seams and I wanted to bring out the design even more by positioning the stripe-like design in different directions. I placed the front pieces so that the design would be vertical and I wanted to have the back piece flow in a horizontal direction. However, the fabric wasn’t quite wide enough to cut it this way without making pattern changes. I decided to create a back waist seam to to the back piece in order to have the pattern go in an opposite direction to the front piece. I cut a line at the waist seam and added seam allowance to those pieces to make this effect. It was a simple adjustment and I love the result. It really brings out the design and style lines of the pattern.
Final Thoughts and Sale News
I enjoyed playing with the fabric’s direction to achieve this fun look and this easy pattern sewed up in a few hours. I’ll definitely add more of these dresses to my wardrobe. I will likely try color blocking my next version and possibly creating a fun dress for my daughter with the girls version, available in sizes 2T-16.

May 5, 2021Lovely dress and great design hack with the stripes. I am unable to get onto instagram. I have tried and tried, but unfortunately it is not recognizing my password and it keeps sending me a link but it does not arrive. I have had this problem for quite some time and if I try to set up a new account it says my email and name are already associated with another account. Too aggravating to keep up. Reset it all in December after days of trying and it doesn’t recognize any of it. YUK!!! Love your dress. Very inspiring..

May 6, 2021Thank you, Joyce. I agree that I could easily switch up this look with a different pair of shoes or by adding a blazer. It’s such a versatile pattern. Thanks for checking out this review! 😊

May 5, 2021I Love your dress, what a great idea. I’m not good enough to think of (out of the box) ideas for fear I’ll ruin it. Thank you for sharing!!

May 6, 2021Thanks, Ruth. It took me a while to gain the confidence to hack a pattern, but I am so glad I did. You should give it a try with a simple hack like this. It’s easier than you think. Plus if you mess it up. You can shortened into a top or something. Thanks for checking out the blog! 😊❤️
