Happy Friday! I’ve made another cute dress for Miss Carmen to add to her back to virtual school collection. I chose today’s Five Dollar Feature Friday Pattern: The Prisma Dress by Love Notions patterns. This is a knit pattern for girls sized 2T-16 and as with all love notions patterns there are several design options. You can create this dress with short, medium or long sleeves. There is an option for an A-line design, bottom flounce or pleated bottom dress style. My favorite options are for the neckline. You can choose a classic scoop neck, a cute Peter Pan collar and a buttoned boat neck.
Options Chosen
When I showed Carmen the pattern, she fell in love with the bottom flounce. I loved the button details on the button neckline, so I combined the two features for her version. Carmen chose short sleeves which are perfect for this time of year. They will transition well into fall with a cute sweater or jacket.
Sewing and Fabric
Carmen has been loving stripes lately, so I chose this lovely cotton jersey striped print that I picked up from Jo-Ann Fabrics a few years ago. I sewed a size 12 in the chest area and graded out to size 14 for the waist and hip. It fits her perfectly with a little extra length for her to grow. I used a narrow zigzag stitch to tack down the facings and for hemming the sleeves. I finished the bottom hem with a narrow rolled hem on my serger.
Directions
The directions for this pattern are clearly marked with instructions for completing each step in clear color pictures. Pay extra attention to the instructions for sewing the boat neckline. I accidentally overlapped the back portion over the front bodice piece and it gave the dress an odd look. Unpicking those knit stitches was no fun! With that being said, a confident beginner could tackle this pattern as long as the directions are carefully followed.
