Hello Sewing Friends!
I hope you are all well and enjoying the rising temps of this summer. I know it’s been over ninety degrees almost everyday here in Maryland and I currently into making flowing dresses to keep myself cool in the heat. Love Notions just released the Tempo Dress and I had a chance to test this amazing new pattern for its new release.
Pattern Details
The Tempo Dress is a fun bra-friendly strapless dress with several styling options. You can sew it as a maxi of midi dress with either a shirred or elasticized back with channels back panel (great if you don’t want to use shirring). It’s available in sizes XS-5X with options for full or standard size busts with roomy in-seam pockets.
Sewing and Alterations
I sewed a straight size medium and the standard bust bodice for my dress. I chose the shirred version of this pattern because I wanted to redeem myself from the shirring catastrophe of my early sewing days. Check out this YouTube video where I share how I restored a failed shirred dress by transforming it into a cute top.
Fortunately, the Tempo Dress has a detailed video included with the pattern that shares great tips on how to create the shirring with elasticated thread. It takes you from how to wind the thread on the sewing machine (instead of by hand) through to explaining how to keep your lines straight while sewing. I found these tips invaluable!
The only change I made to the pattern was a bit of shortening. I shortened the first tier of the skirt to accommodate my 5’1″ height. I hemmed the bottom with a simple straight stitch I like this this simple finish for this design.
Fabric
I used a fun diamond shaped paisley fabric that I picked up from Jo-Ann Fabrics in 2019 on sale. I let this pretty print sit in my stash for far too long because I was unsure of how to use this unique diamond print. I did my best to keep the diamonds aligned on the front and back bodice and on the top tier of the skirt. The bottom tier is gathered and was a bit more tricky to line up with the middle tier, but I am happy with the final result.
This fun pattern is on sale for release week for only $9 through next Tuesday, July 20, 2021. This a quick and easy sew that is a great summer staple. Pick it up on sale using the link below:
