I hope you all getting a great start in sewing this new year. I am so happy to share with you my first 2022 make while also participating in the 2022 #SewnwithNewLook challenge with Minerva. This is a fun challenge to create a garment using a pattern from New Look’s wide pattern during the month of January 2022.
Pattern Chosen
I chose New Look 6638 to create a fun knit dress that I can dress up or down. This is a top and tunic pattern designed for stable knit fabrics. The fabric suggestions include interlock, jersey, and stretch velvet.
There are three views included in the pattern envelope. View A is a three-quarter inch Dolman sleeve tunic that sits just above the mid-thigh area. View B is nearly identical to view A, but the length ends at hip level. View C has a v-neckline, side slits, and ends at mid-thigh. All views have gathering on the front and back bodice. The front bodice has two rows of gathering at the front side waist and the back has one row of gathering at the center back. There are also optional ties for views A and B to add a little more waist definition. I decided to sew view A and lengthen the hemline to make it a dress.
Fabric and Sewing
The fabric I chose for this cute dress is the beautiful Art Gallery Wild Forgotten Cotton Jersey Stretch Knit in Lark. It is a lovely floral print on a forest green background. The flowers are small to medium size and are displayed in pretty shades of beige, gold, brown, pink, and teal. Their arrangement reminds me of a fun day out in a field of spring wildflowers.
This cotton was easy to sew and is a great fabric for sewists who are just beginning to sew with knits. I used a jersey knit machine needle in a size 80 for this mid-weight piece.
There were only a few pattern pieces for this pattern including a front and back bodice, front and back skirt, neckband, and waist ties. It was a quick and easy make that sewed up in only a few hours.
I sewed a size medium and lengthened the pattern by approximately eight inches to achieve a dress look on my five-foot,one-inch frame. I used a zig-zag stitch to sew all seams and a machine blind hem to finish the bottom of the skirt.
Styling and Final Thoughts
I decided to go with a casual look for this comfy dress. I wore my favorite brown boots with gold side buckles. I also wore my favorite pair of floral gold earrings to bring out the golds and browns in the fabric. These fun touches (along with warm tights) allow me to wear this spring-themed print on cold winter days.
I think sewists of all levels would enjoy sewing up this quick and easy pattern in this gorgeous cotton knit. I wish you all the best in sewing for 2022!
