Hello Sewing Friends!
I am so excited to share my latest top with you! I made this gorgeous blouse using the beautiful Minerva Exclusive, Beaming Blooms Viscose Fabric. It’s a bold tropical floral print on a solid background and it’s perfect for all of your summer makes!
Pattern Chosen
I selected Simplicity 9545 for this piece because of the fun bottom flounce and the different sleeve variations. It also has a cute v-neckline with a short center-strap detail that adds a unique flair.
You have the option to choose from long sleeves with elasticized arms above the elbows, short sleeves with cuffs, and a sleeveless view. I chose the long-sleeved version because I like the dramatic effect it gives to the arms. When in doubt, I always choose the dramatic view. It’s a great conversation starter wherever you go!
Fabric and Sewing
I sewed a size 14 for this top with only minor alterations. I shortened the sleeve by about two inches for my shorter arms. I also omitted the bottom elastic to give a more flounced look to the sleeves.
The directions were easy to follow and the accompanying diagrams assisted with the construction process. This pattern is perfect for advanced beginners who have already sewn a few simple garments. The only difficulty a beginner might have is inserting the sleeves and applying the gathered bottom flounce. However, the directions are very easy and I think anyone can create this top if they take their time following the steps as outlined in the instructions.
The fabric was extremely easy to work with while creating this top. I didn’t have any trouble with it while sewing with my machine and serger. It also pressed easily and did not hold onto wrinkles as much as typical linen fabric. The addition of viscose helps give this piece a nice flow that’s perfect for this blouse style while reducing the look of wrinkles.
Styling
I made this top for casual wear and I paired it with my favorite black leggings and some cute flat sandals. I would also wear this top with some fun black sneakers in cooler months as well. Additionally, you could easily dress this top up more with a fitted black skirt and some cute heels for a night on the town. This piece is extremely versatile and I know I’ll get a ton of wear out of it all year long.
Final Thoughts
This pattern and fabric combination turned out exactly how I pictured it my mind. I highly recommend you sew one up for yourself for your own personal collection.
Until next time,
Happy sewing!
