SalonMishawn is an amazing sewist that I’ve been following for some time on Instagram and had the pleasure of meeting at #dcfrocktails in February. I love all of her fabulous makes; so when she decided to create the #sewingbowlchallenge, I knew I wanted to participate. I missed the opening for her July challenge and contacted her to get involved in August. In the vein of Project Runway, there are seven categories that are randomly selected from a a bowl of post-it notes for you to create a one-of-a kind garment.
The Challenge
Here’s what was selected for me:
Garment Type: Duster, Cover-up or Kimono
Fabric Color: Neutral
Pattern: Kwiksew or New Look
Fabric Type: Neoprene or Scuba
Fabric Style: Print on Print
Color: Neutral
Mystery Bowl: Tulle, Mesh or Sheer
Time to Create: End of the Month

Fabric Selections
I chose black as my neutral color and used it throughout my duster. First, I selected a geometric scuba print from my stash that I purchase from either Fabric Mart or Jo-Ann Fabrics some time ago. Next, I paired it with a sheer mesh with stripes and a floral overlay that was in the clearance section of Jo-Ann’s years ago. Finally, I popped over to the thrift store and picked up a lace knit dress that I used for the sleeves.

Pattern Selection and Changes
I decided that New Look 6514 would be the perfect pattern for the challenge. It has options for a separate bodice and skirt as well as sleeve options. I chose the vest version of view C and adjusted the bodice to have the sleeves from versions A & B. I also shortened the sleeves by one inch and finished the bottom hem with a three-thread narrow rolled hem on my serger.
You can see more details on the pattern and fun twirls in my corresponding YouTube video here:
Head over to Instagram to see more of fabulous makes in the #sewingbowlchallenge. I am so glad Mishawn created this challenge which pushed my creativity to new levels. I hope you all have a chance to participate.

Until next time,
Happy Sewing,
Crystal

August 17, 2020Thanks Cheyenne. I am so happy I was able to use these fabrics from my stash. The black in each print works so well together to make this a cohesive piece. This challenge really helped me think outside the box and expand my creativity. Thanks for stopping by the blog!
