Happy Friday! I am popping in today to share with you two amazingly easy and fun to sew patterns; The Janelle Skirt and the Carrie Purse.
The Janelle Skirt
The Janelle skirt is a pencil skirt pattern created by Eryn Shields of Style Sew Me Patterns. This was one of her first pattern releases and the design still rocks today! It is designed for mid-weight woven fabrics and is available in sizes XXS-3X. It fits hips of 33 inches to 55 inches (84 cm -140 cm).
Fabric
I used a mid-weight cotton sateen print from Mood Fabrics called the Amorphous Amalgamation Stretch Cotton Sateen. It is currently out of stock, but Mood has several other prints from their exclusive Serengeti line that are perfect for this pattern. Denim, stretch twill and heavier linen would also work well for this style.
Pattern Changes and Sewing
This pattern is available as a printable pdf download and and there are only 26 pages to tape together to assemble it at home. You can also send the pattern to a printing company using the available A0 large copy file included with the pattern. There are only four pattern pieces for this style including the right front, left front, back piece and waistband. The waistband is interfaced and it is closed using an invisible zipper. There are also darts on the back pieces for extra shaping.
I sewed a size large for a hip size of 40-42 inches. I raised the hemline by three inches for all of the skirt pieces to accommodate my 5’1″ height. I also extended the length of the front split by sewing down one inch lower than the recommended 10 inches in the pattern.
The directions were clear and easy to follow and there is an accompanying tutorial that walks you through every step of the sewing process on the Style Sew Me YouTube channel. This is a pattern that even a beginner could sew up with ease.
The Carrie Purse
The Carrie Purse is a cute bag pattern created by Robyn Andrea of StylesinSeams.com . It is designed for mid-weight woven fabrics. It’s the perfect size for carrying your phone and a few essentials for a night out on the town.
Pattern Pieces and Sewing
The directions for this bag are clear and have full color photos that make it easy to follow. There are two outer body pieces, fabric tie pieces, and bottom and inner lining body pieces. The outer body is interfaced with a an iron-on fusible fleece or sew-in lining. It’s closed with a magnetic snap closure that is backed with a standard woven interfacing. This was my first time using a magnetic snap closure and the directions walked me through the process. I used a flat head screwdriver to get the closure to lay flat against the fabric. You could also use a sew-in snap closure if you don’t have a magnetic snap in your stash.
The tie pieces are cut twice creating a facing so that the wrong side of the fabric never shows. I love this feature because it gives the bag a polished and couture look. The lining is sewn in by hand using a a slip stitch.
This pattern is perfect for carrying your essentials and only takes a few hours cut and sew. This bag would also make a great gifts and family because you can sew it using things you already have in your sewing space.
I highly recommend both of these patterns and I hope you add them to your pattern collection.
